The International Football Federation, FIFA, plans to ask each country to name a stadium after Pelé, according to FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Infantino made the disclosure in Brazil, after flying there to attend the soccer legend’s wake and funeral.

Plans existed in April 2021 for the famous Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro to bear Pelé’s name, but ultimately that did not happen due to a veto from the political world.

The 82-year-old Pelé died on 29 December after a battle with cancer.

On Monday, a 24-hour death vigil is being organised in honour of the three-time world champion at the Vila Belmiro stadium of Santos FC, the club for which the former striker played almost his entire career.

On Tuesday, Pelé will be buried in a private ceremony.
