The Ghent branch of Sport Vlaanderen has opened a new gym three times the size of the old one, with new equipment, the Flemish sports agency said in a press release.

Top athletes like Nina Sterckx, Nina Derwael, Emma Plasschaert and Bashir Abdi will be able to prepare optimally in a 365m² space for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Weightlifter Nina Sterckx, who took silver last week at the European Championships, was enthusiastic. “The new weight room is a big plus in my preparation for my future goals,” she said. “The equipment we already know well will be combined with new equipment, mats, bars and weights, and everything is perfect.

“We can also train in much greater numbers, which is motivating. It is also really nice to train with top athletes from other disciplines who come to work on their strength.”

In preparation for the Paris Games, Sport Vlaanderen is planning to renovate several other sports areas in Ghent. It will soon be the turn of the paramedical area, the recovery area with ice bath and sauna, and the fitness area.
