Saudi Arabia is currently the only nation to express interest in hosting the 2034 football World Cup, according to a FIFA announcement on Tuesday.
FIFA launched the application process for the 2034 tournament on 4 October, restricting the bid to members of Asia’s and Oceania’s football confederations. The aim is to allow “all regions of the world to get the chance to host a World Cup within eight years,” according to FIFA.
The deadline for declarations of interest was Tuesday 31 October at 16:00 GMT. Australia’s football federation indicated on Monday that it would not bid to host the competition.
The 2030 edition of the World Cup will be hosted by Morocco, Portugal and Spain. As part of the Centenary celebrations, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay will each host a game in that edition.
The inaugural football World Cup was played in Uruguay in 1930.
