NATO member Romania has reported finding possible drone fragments on its territory near the Ukrainian border, following a new Russian bombing campaign against Ukraine, the Romanian Defence Ministry announced on Friday.

Debris linked to the impact of a drone was discovered near the border with Ukraine, in the southeastern region of Tulcea, the Ministry stated, adding that its systems detected violations of Romanian airspace and two F-16s were mobilised.

The Romanian Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the “irresponsible attacks by Russian forces that violate all norms of international law.”

It stressed that “Russia’s illegal and unprovoked aggression against Ukraine generates risks for the entire region.”

Romania has regularly reported repeated violations of its airspace and has discovered drone fragments on several occasions.

In September, the Defence Ministers of NATO’s eastern flank called for a “collective response” to airspace violations by Russian drones and missiles targeting Ukraine.

The current legal framework prevents such interventions during peacetime.
