Israel has launched strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities and other military sites across the country, an Israeli military source confirmed on Friday.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the operation would continue for as many days as necessary.

The Israeli military said in a communique that dozens of Israeli Air Force fighter jets had completed the first phase of the operation, which included strikes on dozens of military targets. These included nuclear sites in various regions of Iran, it said.

Israel informed the United States that attacking Iran was “necessary for its defence,” US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Thursday, cautioning Iran against “targeting American interests.”

The US Secretary of State clarified that the United States was not involved in the attack. He said the US priority was to protect its forces in the region, according to a communiqué.

Earlier on Thursday, Donald Trump had reiterated his commitment to resolving the Iranian nuclear issue through diplomacy and urged Israel, a close ally of the United States, not to conduct strikes against Iran.
