Cases of the coronavirus Delta variant have nearly disappeared in Belgium, with Omicron cases now accounting for almost all reported cases.

As of Tuesday, infections with the Delta variant accounted for 3.3% of cases in Belgium, according to virologist Piet Maes (KU Leuven), Belga News Agency reports. Last week, 10% of cases were still linked to this strain.

Belgium averaged 49,289 daily infections for the seven days ending 22 January. Between 19 and 25 January, an average of 330.3 patients suffering from Covid-19 were admitted to hospitals per day.

The vast majority of Covid cases (94.4%) in Belgium relate to the Omicron BA.1 sub-variant. The new Omicron BA.2 variant accounts for 2.1% cases, up 1% from last week.
