China announces "targeted military actions"

China has announced that its military will launch “targeted military actions” in response to U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.

The military’s operation aims to “resolutely uphold national sovereignty and territorial integrity and firmly thwart external interference and separatist attempts for ‘Taiwan independence’,” said Defense Ministry spokesperson Wu Qian.

Beijing will hold a series of military exercises near Taiwan from August 4-7, according to China’s state news agency Xinhua, which said live rounds would also be used.

Ms. Pelosi arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday, defying stern warnings from Beijing against a visit that Beijing regards as a challenge to its sovereignty, the Walls Street Journal reported.
