Ukraine's president announces the arrest of a suspect following 'terrorist attack' in Kramatorsk

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the arrest of an individual on Wednesday following the Russian “terrorist attack” in the eastern town of Kramatorsk.

The attack, on Tuesday, left at least 11 people dead and “more than 60 injured,” according to the latest toll released by the Ukrainian president.

“Today, the security services and special police forces arrested the person who coordinated this terrorist attack,” Zelensky said in his daily evening address.

“Anyone who helps Russian terrorists destroy lives deserves the maximum penalty,” the Ukrainian leader warned.

Zelensky said “there may still be people under the rubble.” The perpetrators of these strikes “are people without humanity,” he continued, deeming such actions “high treason,” punishable by life imprisonment.

The Russian strike on Tuesday evening in Kramatorsk destroyed a restaurant, while flats, shops, cars, a post office and several other buildings also suffered damage, according to the Ukrainian Prosecutor’s Office.

“The Russian missiles cost the lives of 11 of our fellow citizens, including three children,” President Zelensky said on Wednesday evening. “More than 60 people were wounded.”

The Russian Defence Ministry, for its part, claimed to have struck a “temporary deployment point” of the 56th Mechanised Infantry Brigade of the Ukrainian armed forces.

A major railway hub and home to military sites, Kramatorsk, in the Donetsk region, is very regularly the target of Russian bombardments.

The deadliest was at its railway station, which was hit in April 2022, killing 61 people and injuring more than 160. This strike took place a few weeks after the start of the Russian invasion, at a time when crowds of civilians were trying to leave the city in the face of the fighting.
