A lorry carrying an oversized load struck a bridge on the E40 motorway towards Ghent on Saturday morning, causing a six-kilometre traffic jam.

The right lane of the E40 towards Ghent is closed for bridge inspections. The bridge was hit by a crane transported on a low-loader.

Motorists between Beernem and Aalter should expect an additional delay of around 45 minutes, according to Peter Bruyninckx, spokesperson for the Flemish Traffic Centre. Long-distance travellers are advised to take alternative routes. In the opposite direction, towards the coast, traffic is slowed due to onlookers.

Jef Schoenmaekers, spokesperson for Roads and Traffic East Flanders, stated that vehicles are temporarily prohibited from crossing the affected bridge at Blekkervijverstraat in Aalter.

The duration of the disruption is currently unknown.
