In recent years, mobile phone usage in Germany has shifted, with online app calls rising from 121 billion minutes in 2022 to 197 billion in 2024, surpassing traditional mobile network calls, which totalled 145 billion minutes last year, according to the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur – Bnetza).

Video calls have also become more popular, increasing from 143 billion minutes in 2022 to 184 billion in 2024.

Conversely, landline phone usage has declined sharply, with only 57 billion minutes recorded last year compared to 104 billion in 2020.

Despite these changes, the most common form of daily communication remains online messaging, which includes texts, photos, voice messages, videos, emojis, or GIFs.

In 2024, 902 billion messages were sent over German networks, an increase of 11 billion from the previous year, as reported by Bnetza.
