Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy proposed holding discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and possibly US President Donald Trump on Wednesday, citing concerns about Russia’s military presence near Ukraine’s border.
According to Zelenskyy, Russia has amassed 50,000 troops near Sumy, in northeastern Ukraine, indicating a potential new Russian offensive. Russia has also taken steps to seize permanent control of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, and continues to make advances in the region.
He remains open to dialogue, stating, “We are ready for a format involving Trump, Putin, and myself.” Zelenskyy added that he is amenable to any meeting format, whether it be two- or three-way.
The Ukrainian leader also anticipates sanctions from the United States targeting Russia’s energy and banking sectors, due to Moscow’s refusal to accept a ceasefire proposal.
Additionally, Zelenskyy pointed out that Kyiv has yet to receive a memorandum announced by Russia. Last week, Putin expressed willingness to work with Ukraine on a potential peace agreement. Russian diplomats had indicated they would send the document to Kyiv following a significant prisoner exchange completed last weekend.
