A fire broke out in an apartment building on Rupelstraat in Antwerp North on Sunday morning, which was quickly brought under control by the fire brigade, and no injuries were reported; however, there are indications of arson.
The fire was reported to emergency services shortly after 7:00. “We quickly brought the fire under control, but the damage to the apartment is considerable. The fire spread through several rooms, and the walls are completely blackened,” said Ninke Neirynck, a spokesperson for the Antwerp fire brigade.
Five people are registered as residents in the building, according to the police. “All residents were evacuated, and no one was injured. There are indications of arson, and a 38-year-old resident was arrested. The forensic lab will conduct a site investigation,” explained Kim Bastiaens, a spokesperson for the Antwerp police.
