Prince William called on world leaders to “think big” to safeguard the oceans during his speech at the Blue Economy and Finance Forum (BEFF) in Monaco on Sunday.
He emphasised the urgency of achieving the target set at the 2022 UN Biodiversity Summit, which aims to protect at least 30% of land and sea by 2030. Rising sea temperatures, plastic pollution, and overfishing are threatening these fragile ecosystems and the communities dependent on them.
William warned of the depletion of once abundant ocean resources, stressing that everyone will feel the impact and share the responsibility for change, both positively and negatively. He expressed deep concern over the transformation of vibrant sea forests into desolate deserts due to human activities.
The prince urged heads of state and government leaders at the forum to adopt bold measures to protect the oceans. Quoting Sir David Attenborough, he stated, “For the future of our planet, for future generations: if we save the sea, we save our world.”
