A 19-year-old detainee was knifed to death on Friday at the Den Hey-Acker juvenile detention centre in Breda, in the south of the Netherlands, according to Dutch police.

A 20-year-old was also injured and taken to hospital following the knife attack, according to Belga news agency.

Dutch police have arrested an 18-year-old and are looking into the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, which was reported at about 3.00 pm on Friday. The Dutch radio station, Omroep Brabant, reported that police officers wearing bullet-proof vests were present at the scene.

The Den Hey-Acker made headlines in January when another detainee escaped from it and was later shot dead by police in Belgium. The man, who was bearing a firearm, had taken members of the Judicial Institutions Service, DJI, hostage but they were able to leave the vehicle unhurt in Hoogstraten, Antwerp Province.

A clash with the police ensued in Brecht, with the police trading gunfire with the escapee. The juvenile was shot dead but no one else was wounded. The judicial inquiry into this shootout is still in progress.
