Several hundred demonstrators gathered in central Brussels on Monday afternoon ahead of a march condemning alleged police violence during recent protests against cuts to Francophone education.

By around 15:00, protesters had assembled on the Mont des Arts before setting off towards Place Poelaert, where the main demonstration was scheduled to begin at 16:00.

The protestors had already reached the Sablon area by mid-afternoon.

Participants chanted slogans including "Plus chauds que les fachos" and "Révolution", accompanied by drums and occasional loud bangs.

No significant disruption to traffic had been reported at the time of the gathering.

Police presence in the vicinity also appeared limited during the early stages of the demonstration.

The protest was organised by activist groups Mars Attacks, Parents Attacks, Students Attacks and Écoles en lutte.

The organisations say they are protesting against what they describe as police violence during demonstrations held in recent days against education spending cuts in the French Community.
