The ongoing energy crisis and the possibility of power shortages have made the extension of the life of two of Germany's three remaining nuclear power plants more likely, German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said on Tuesday.

"We are already in a situation where the stress test indicates that it may be necessary to continue using nuclear energy for the safety of the grid," the minister said at a climate conference in Berlin.

The German government agreed earlier this month to keep two of the three nuclear plants in reserve after the end of this year, reversing a long-planned shutdown.

The government had come under heavy pressure to delay the final step in phasing out nuclear power after Russia's invasion of Ukraine caused a dramatic spike in energy prices.
