The first coins bearing the effigy of King Charles III of Great Britain went into circulation on Monday.

This is a series of special commemorative five-pound coins in honour of the late Queen Elizabeth II, which will be sold to collectors by the British Royal Mint.

On Friday, 50-pence coins with the portrait of Charles had already been presented. They should be in circulation by the end of the year.

Sculptor Martin Jennings designed the portrait of the king, who looks to the left on the coins, unlike his mother who looked to the right.

According to British tradition, each monarch on a coin faces in the opposite direction to his/her predecessor. Like previous kings, Charles does not wear a crown in the image.

A different rule applies to female monarchs, so Elizabeth II is always represented with a crown on the coins with her effigy.
