US social network Twitter has stopped taking action against misinformation about the coronavirus since it was taken over by billionaire Elon Musk.

The rules against fake news were already suspended last Wednesday, according to a message published on a Twitter site.

The company had established rules in 2020 to stop the spread of false and misleading information about the virus and vaccines. At the time, Twitter mentioned a danger for people who might use unscientific treatments or forego vaccination.

In total, more than 100,000 posts were deleted and more than 11,000 accounts suspended for breaking the rules, according to several reports.

Musk himself has repeatedly downplayed the pandemic. He has also criticised the lockdowns that have at times halted production at his Tesla electric car factory.
