Argentine Vice President Cristina Kirchner was sentenced on Tuesday to six years in prison, even though her parliamentary immunity protects her, and to life ineligibility, for fraud and corruption while president from 2007 to 2015.

Mrs. Kirchner, 69, was found guilty of “fraudulent administration” to the detriment of the state.

The trial concerned the awarding of public contracts in her political stronghold of Santa Cruz, southern Argentina, during her two terms as president.

The prosecution had requested a 12-year jail sentence for the former president, who has consistently denied any wrongdoing and deemed the trial a political one.
