German railway company Deutsche Bahn is looking for 25,000 new workers this year: after taking on 28,000 last year, it is still struggling with staff shortages that have forced it to cut trains.

Many employees have left the company, including some who have retired, while others are at home sick. Additionally, the demand for train travel has been rising since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Deutsche Bahn’s network has struggled with delays and many train cancellations in recent months. “We need tens of thousands of new colleagues to cope with the challenges at Deutsche Bahn,” says Human Resources Director Martin Seiler.

However, it is not certain that enough suitable candidates will be found, due to the strict requirements of the German labour market, Seiler acknowledged.
