An investigation has been opened in Spain into possible acts of terror following a deadly attack on churches on Wednesday night in the southern town of Algesiras.

A sexton was killed in the attack, allegedly with a knife, the prosecutor’s office confirmed to several media outlets.

According to Spanish media, the perpetrator was reported to have attacked at least two churches on Wednesday night, injuring four people, including a priest, and killing the sexton, whose body was found in front of one of the attacked churches.

The perpetrator was later apprehended. His motives and the exact circumstances of the attacks were not immediately clear.
