About 13,000 people have been asked to leave their homes temporarily in a district of Düsseldorf, western Germany, following the discovery of a US bomb left over from the Second World War, the city’s fire brigade said on Monday.
The bomb, which weighs one tonne, was due to be defused on Monday night. It was discovered during work in the area, which is near the city's zoo, according to the fire brigade statement.
The ground in German cities remains littered with unexploded bombs that are regularly discovered on building sites, 78 years after the end of the Second World War.
In 2017, the discovery in the western city of Frankfurt of a 1.4-tonne bomb led to the evacuation of 65,000 people.
In December 2021, a Second World War bomb exploded on a building site near Munich station in the south of the country, injuring four people and disrupting rail traffic.
