European health authorities have recorded at least 134 cases of salmonellosis, which they say are linked to infected chicken meat.

Cases have been discovered in 10 EU countries and Norway, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control said on Wednesday from Stockholm. In Austria, one person has died.

Most of the cases were reported between January and August.

Interviews with patients in Austria and Denmark indicate that salmonella infections could be linked to the consumption of chicken meat.

Two weeks ago, Austrian health authorities became concerned about a possible link between salmonella illnesses and chicken kebabs from Poland.

According to the officials, almost all the people who fell ill in Austria had eaten chicken kebabs shortly before.

Further investigations revealed that all the restaurants concerned used kebab skewers imported from Poland.
