German authorities detained a fresh suspect on Monday in connection with a possible New Year’s Eve plot to attack Cologne’s cathedral, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reports, citing police sources.
The individual arrested is a 41-year-old man of dual German and Turkish nationality. He was apprehended in Bochum.
Three other men taken into custody on Sunday, aged 25, 30 and 38, were all released by a judge on Monday. They were all Tajik or Uzbek nationals.
A 30-year-old Tajik arrested on 24 December remains in custody.
Just before Christmas, the police received information about a potential plan to attack the iconic cathedral on New Year’s Eve. As a result, security measures were intensified, and the end-of-year celebrations were incident-free.
