“King of the Belgians” wins the public prize at the Odessa festival

“King of the Belgians”, the fourth feature-length film by Peter Brosens and Jessica Woodworth, won the Grand Prix during the Odessa International Film Festival in the Ukraine on Saturday night. It’s the eighth international prize for the 2016 film. It has already appeared at 50 festivals.

The Odessa festival, now in its eighth year, is the biggest of its type in the Ukraine. As well as winning the Grand Prix, or public prize, “King of the Belgians” was also in the event’s international competition.

We will find out if the film is one of the three finalists for the LUX prize, awarded by the European Parliament, on the 25th of July. The winner will be shown in 40 cities in the 28 EU member states. A jury made up of EMPs will announce the winner during a plenary session in Strasburg on the 15th of November.

“King of the Belgians” tells the story of King Nicolas III, who is on a state visit to Istanbul when his country suddenly falls apart. The King has to return home immediately to save his kingdom. However, a powerful solar eruption blocks all forms of telecommunication and air traffic. The King and his entourage are stuck in Istanbul. With the help of a British filmmaker and a troop of Bulgarian dancers, they manage to escape from Turkey incognito. Thus begins an odyssey through the Balkans, during which the King discovers the world as it really is, and himself.
