A group of youths set fire to a large Star of David in wood on Saturday evening in Alken, a Limburg commune close to Hasselt, according to information published in the Het BeLang van Limburg, Het Nieuwsbald, and De Standaard on Monday. Some of the youths, who cannot be traced for the moment, were wearing white outfits at the time of the incident. The local mayor Marc Penxten (N-VA) is taking this matter very seriously. “I have asked the police to leave no stone unturned”, he said.
“I especially want to understand why they did it. The fact that the incident took place on the same day as the commemoration of Kristallnacht cannot be a coincidence”.
From late on the 9th of November to early on the 10th of November 1938, known as Kristallnacht, more than 1,000 synagogues were burned in Nazi Germany. Around 7,500 businesses belonging to Jewish people were also destroyed and 400 Jews were killed or committed suicide.
