Belgians who are owed money by the tax department are reimbursed an average of 1445 euros. More than half of tax payers paid too much tax in 2014. However, 1.7 million Belgians still have to pay their tax, according to Saturday’s Het Laaste Nieuws. Over the last few years, more and more Belgians have been getting money back from the tax department. In 2014, 53% got money back. This concerned 6.7 million tax forms. Lots of tax payers are getting reimbursed as the deposit taken from their gross salary was too large. The administration is still working with tax rates that are not adapted to the recent tax reforms.
In total, the State had to give back 5.3 billion euros for the last tax year, an average of 1445 euros per tax form.
