Respect Seniors received 5,554 calls last year (an increase of 9%). This means professionals from the Walloon Agency Against Abuse of Pensioners dealt with 793 abuse cases, La Dernière Heure reported on Wednesday. Most of the victims are women. “Out of the 793 cases, 69% are women and 9% groups of people, meaning couples or institution residents”, the Walloon agency said.
Abuse mainly occurs in the pensioners home (78% of cases), and most of the perpetrators are family (66% of cases). In four cases in ten, it’s one of the victim’s children.
Respect Seniors has also noticed an increase in psychological abuse, which concerns 38% of cases. 20% of cases concern “financial” abuse.
