Around 50 architects consider the renovation of a Charleroi neighbourhood

Around 50 architects from several different countries visited a neighbourhood in Gilly (Charleroi) on Saturday morning. The neighbourhood was on a list of sites needing renovation chosen by the organisers of the Europan architecture competition. It will therefore be included in the competition. Once they arrived in Gilly, the architects received information on the neighbourhood and saw the different areas that would be renovated during the competition. The Europan competition is open to architects who are less than 40 years old. A few months ago, Charleroi asked the organisers to include Gilly on the list of sites participants could work on. According to Charleroi, Gilly perfectly corresponds to the “adaptable towns” theme chosen for 2015.

On Saturday, Charleroi’s master architect told the architects about the various urban renovation efforts for Charleroi over the last few years. Gilly has the peculiarity of having a vacated former swimming pool, a cultural hall, and a communal administration building. Charleroi also said it wanted to gain inspiration from the propositions the architects will submit for the renovation of the area.
