One in five Flemish citizens in Belgium are against the multicultural character of the national football team

Twenty percent of Flemish citizens believe that the multi-cultural character of the Red Devils does not represent a “good example” for the young, according to a survey that will be published by Fan, the football magazine of Nieuwsblad on Saturday. Equally challenging, one out of four persons surveyed does not believe that monkey sounding chants are racist when a black player has the ball.

The survey, that involved 1,020 Flemish citizens, indicate furthermore that 62% of the persons who visit stadiums frequently have been witness to racist incidents.

The Belgian football union hopes that a change of mentality will take place. “When a racist applauds a goal by Romelu Lukaku, he must realise that something is wrong?”, hopes the president of L’UBRSFA, François De Keersmaecker.
