Personalised number plates have been a big success: 5,846 were handed out in 2015. This figure was given by the Transport Minister Jacqueline Galant (MR) in response to a parliamentary question. It was relayed by De Zondag on Sunday.
Many drivers opt for their own name or a word linked to their car. Companies also follow the trend, and customize their vehicles.
The rules on these personalised number plates were relaxed in 2013. Since then, the number of requests has doubled. 2014 was a record year, with 6,498 requests. Over the last five years, these personalised plates have earned the State 21.6 million euros.
The price of these plates doubled at the end of November last year, to 2,000 euros. There was a large drop in requests in December.
