Significant drop in disappearances from 2010 to 2015

The number of alarming disappearances in Belgium has reduced considerably in recent years, according to the Federal Police’s Missing Persons Cell. The unit registered 1,477 cases in 2010 and a high of 1,604 in 2011, but since then, the number has decreased progressively from 1,439 in 2012 to 1,393 in 2014 and 1,188 in 2015, Home Affairs Minister Jan Jambon (N-VA party) stated in response to a written question from parliamentarian Denis Ducarme (MR party).

The decrease in 2011-2015 concerned mainly minors and, to a lesser extent, senior citizens. The number of minors who went missing shrank from 420 in 2011 to 187 in 2015, while the number of elderly people who disappeared went down from 1,184 to 1,001 during the same period.
