Around 200 members of the Responsible Young Drivers (RYD) association made sure nearly 1,500 revellers got home on New Year’s Eve, the organisation announced in a press release on Sunday morning.
The 25th RYD operation began dead on Midnight. Around 200 drivers took part. They were out driving until 6am to make sure revellers got home safe. 80 RYD vehicles were used during the operation.
In total, 500 cars and 1,500 people were driven home.
During each trip an RYD member drove the reveller’s vehicle, while being followed by another RYD member in one of the cars charted for the operation.
“This New Year operation is a symbolic action, a necessary solution needed once a year”, says RYD spokesman Johan Chiers. “We want everyone to have a way to get home safely after the New Year festivities. The RYD appeals to every motorist to act responsibly the rest of the year”.
