Remarriage will no longer affect the children’s inheritance

Spouses with extended families will soon be able to leave everything to their children and nothing to each other, L’Echo and De Tijd reported on Friday.
A quarter of Belgian households are made up of extended families. But couples that already have children from a previous marriage often avoid getting married because part of their children’s inheritance would go to their new spouse. This should no longer be a problem soon: couples will be able to leave everything to their children and nothing to each other if they want to.

This new law will also ensure that a separation won’t threaten a freelancer’s business.

This proposed bill on marital rights – put forward by Sonja Becq (CD&V), Sarah Smeyers (N-VA), Carina Van Cauter (Open Vld) and Philippe Goffin (MR) – will change a lot of things for families in this relatively common situation.

Justice Minister Koen Geens (CD&V) will present the new bill to the Minister’s Council on Friday.
