According to the Mirabal Belgium platform which unites Belgian feminist associations, 38 women have been killed in Belgium in 2017 following male violence, and 14 since the beginning of this year, reported Wednesday La Libre Belgique. The feminicides, which include all ages and all cultures, have taken place in Kasterlee, Schaerbeek, Dworp, Ophasselt, Saint-Nicolas, Wandre (2), Meise, Andenne, Charleroi, Furnes, Herentals and Herstal (2) since the beginning of the year.

In most cases, these murders are linked to a separation which the ex-partner could not accept. The modus operandi varies: knife wounds, throat slitting, strangulation, bullet wounds, etc.

Shocked by this observation, Ecolo Co-President Zakia Khattabi is calling for action. “It is necessary that our legal arsenal recognize the specificity of feminicide, that the police be trained to follow up on reports of violence towards women. It is time that we be equipped with means of intervention as soon as the threat exists, so that we do not react when it is too late,” she affirms in the columns of La Libre Belgique. Her party requests that the federal government make this issue a priority in its crime-prevention policy.
