The demand for personalized licence plates has significantly increased since their price has come down. The finding has been revealed in figures requested by the deputy, Veli Yüksel (CD&V), from the Minister for Mobility, François Bellot (MR). Since the introduction of this option in April 2014, it has brought in €19 million to the Treasury.
After an initial price of €1,000, the price had been increased to 2,000 in December 2015. The strategy had led to a considerable decrease in demand.
Until November 2015, an average of 546 requests was achieved on a monthly basis by the state, after which this figure fell to 141 in 2016 and 2017, following the price increase. Veli Yüksel indicated that from a figure of “€6.4 million” collected in 2015 by the state, revenue from the source decreased to €3.7 million in 2016 and then €3.3 million last year.
Last December, it was decided to return to the price initially used of €1,000, and the move is paying off. Yüksel said, “From December to March 2018, we can see that demand has, once again increased, towards an average 469.5 per month.”
