Flanders is considering placing nets on the Scheldt River to retain plastic waste, De Standaard, Het Nieuwsblad and Gazet van Antwerpen reported on Monday. To avoid the waste from being swept into the sea, which is already strongly polluted, the Flemish waterways management service, Vlaamse Waterweg, wants to place nets in eight places by Spring 2019 in a one-year pilot project after which the Flemish authorities will decide what to do with them.
“We shall launch an appeal in late June to all interested businesses and non-profit associations,” the head of the project, Frederik Van Overloop, said. “The administrators will be responsible for the investments. If the results are conclusive, the nets will serve as a global showcase,” he added.
