Racist signs removed from outside of schools in Limburg

The city of Lommel has removed 41 signs with the text 'Beware! Crossing illegals'. The plates were hung in different places in the municipality of Limburg on Saturday night, according to reports. "The signs were mostly in front of different schools attended by the children of the asylum seekers. It was therefore urgent to withdraw them," said Alderman, Peter Vanderkrieken (CD & V).

Several residents of Lommel noticed the signs on Sunday morning and informed the municipality and the police. They were quickly removed thanks to help from a number of volunteers.

We were outraged that this is the way in which action is being taken against a group of people who are staying here temporarily. If one reduces the actions to such an extent that one also starts to target children, then that is very inappropriate, said Vanderkrieken

Lommel currently hosts 800 asylum seekers in its temporary Parelstrand centre. Recently, it was decided to keep this centre open five more months, until the end of August.
