A "routine" traffic violation led to a police chase and, eventually, a crash in the Brussels municipality of Saint Gilles on Monday evening.

The incident occurred after a patrol of the police zone Montgomery tried to check a car for a traffic violation."Our people wanted to carry out a routine check for a defective tail light, but when the driver saw the flashing lights, he fled", said Chief of Police Michael Jonniaux, reports Bruzz.

The subsequent chase went from Etterbeek across Brussels to Saint-Gilles, and was assisted by the police from South and Brussels Capital/Ixelles zones, said Jonniaux.

The fleeing driver eventually lost control of the steering wheel in Saint-Gilles and caused an accident. He and his passenger were then arrested. "A small amount of cannabis was found in the car," said Jonniaux.
