A 35-year-old man from Wallonia has spent 60 days in pre-trial detention after he broke into a house and stole a bottle of port, a length of time which his lawyer has called “ruthless”.
The man – in his thirties – was arrested in May, after breaking the window of an abandoned house and stealing a bottle of port, reports De Standaard. A neighbour witnessed the event, but the suspect has denied the claims.
The man has spent the past 60 days in pre-trial detention but was released following a hearing on Tuesday. The judge decided to declare a verdict on the day, giving the man a six-month suspended sentence.
Sixty days of pre-trial detention for a bottle of port is ruthless, said the man’s lawyer. By sentencing the day itself, which is not often the case, the judge released my client and showed great humanity.
