Brussels Correctional Tribunal – five years in prison requested for a Schaerbeek café owner accused of rape

The public prosecutor Jean-Marie Mawet requested a sentence of five years in prison for Abdelhakin.E on Wednesday morning. He has been charged with rape. He is suspected of drugging and raping a woman in his café, close to the Place Liedts in Schaerbeek. The individual is known to the courts for similar offences. “I ask you to hand down a sentence of five years in prison, but I could have asked for double that seeing as the suspect is a repeat offender”, Jean-Marie Mawet said to the court.

The defendant, Abdelhakin.E, was convicted of a similar offence by the Brussels appeal court in 2004. He received five years in prison with parole after three years for indecent acts and group rape on minors.

The defendant was then aged sixteen and the Youth Court divested his case.

On Wednesday, he was accused of raping a woman he met in a café in a street near la Grande Place in Brussels in May.

The defendant got talking to her and invited her to come to his own café, near the Place Liedts in Schaerbeek, for a drink the next day.

The victim said she remembered “drinking a Vodka and Coke that tasted funny” and then feeling dizzy.

She said she woke up in a bed naked, to find the suspect raping her.

The defendant denies the charges.

The case will continue until the 12th of February.
