Military presence on the streets to be reduced gradually

Belgium’s cabinet on Friday approved a gradual reduction of the military presence in the country’s streets following the downgrading of the security-threat level from 3 to 2. The number will reach 750 this month before decreasing once again, Minister of Defence Steven Vandeput said.

On the 19th of February, the Coordinating Unit for Threat Analysis, OCAM, reduced the security phase in Belgium from 3 to 2 on a scale of 4. However, Level 3 will be maintained in some areas.

As a result, fewer members of the military are needed to carry out surveillance missions in cooperation with the police. However, a reserve will remain on standby, ready to be deployed if needed, Vandeput said.
