A beer cannot be described as “good for your health”, a German tribunal decided on Tuesday. This type of advertising goes against European legislation, which does not permit a commercial campaign for beer to be based on health benefits.
Some German brewers like mentioning the strict German legislation on producing beer, and how pure that makes the product.
The Härle brewery in Leutkirch, Baden-Württemberg (south), has described one of its beers as “healthy” (bekömmlich) to try and encourage people to drink it. This message has not pleased a Berlin Fair Competition Association (VSW). They say that such a description camouflages the dangers of alcohol, and wants to ban advertising it. The Ravensburg tribunal agreed with the association.
