Following Russia's move of military forces into Ukrainian territory on Monday, the United Kingdom has announced sanctions on Russia, with European Union leaders considering their next move.

The British government's security cabinet is meeting Tuesday to decide the severity of sanctions, the BBC reports. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the UK will "hit Russia very hard."

The EU also is considering imposing sanctions on Russia. The foreign ministers of the 27 EU Member States are attending a previously scheduled forum in Paris to discuss cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. The ministers will determine Russia sanctions on Tuesday afternoon, Belga News Agency reports.

"This afternoon the Council will decide on the sanctions we will take," said Josep Borrell, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. "We must act quickly and that means this afternoon, here in Paris."

The push for European nations to impose sanctions against Russia gained steam late Monday after Russian military forces started crossing the border with Ukraine. The Russian troops began moving into eastern Ukrainian territories controlled by separatist forces aligned with Moscow and mired in a standoff with the Ukrainian military.
