Carlos Sierens passed away at the age of 72 following a long illness, informed the Dutch-language press and the Falco Gand club Tuesday. The emblematic Ghent figure of Belgian basketball, Carlos Sierens was notably President of the Belgian basketball league, but was above all President of the main Ghent club for over ten years.

In its time, the Ghent club of the First Division was named Bobcat Gand, and then Siemens Gand. Presently, Gand Hawks are in the Second Division. Their most notable triumphs were obtained in the 1990s, with the culmination point being the final of the Belgian Cup won in 1992 against Sunair Ostende. Bobcat Gand thus took its revenge for a final match lost in the preceding season, after overtime, against the Ostend team.

His funeral will be held on Monday.
