Six young Belgians who attended WorldSkills in Sao Paulo received medallions of excellence, Skillsbelgium revealed in a press release on Monday. The six medallions of excellence were given to Amélie Gillet (Namur, painting and decorating), William Denayer (Namur, restaurant service), Robin Haquenne (Namur, cooking), Leroy De Ryk (Eastern Flanders, soldering), Antoine Pernuit (Luxemburg, carpentry), and Matthieu Deneffe (Luxemburg, carpentry). William Denayer got the best results among the Belgians. Two other Belgian participants were 1 point away from a medallion at end of the competition.
“Brazil was the big winner at the 43rd WorldSkills. They used all the technical means at their disposal to impress judges; they prepared their competitors well, like every host country does during the Olympic Games. It has to be said that Asian countries also did very well, especially in industrial and technological sectors. At a European level, big nations like France and the United Kingdom won a lot of prizes, just like the Germanic countries, where alternate training is the norm”, says Skillsbelgium.
In total, 12 young Belgians went to WorldSkills, which took place in Sao Paulo (Brazil) this year, from the 12th to the 15th of August. WorldSkills is an international competition, organised similar to the Olympic Games, which aims to promote technical jobs. The next one will take place in Abu Dhabi in 2017.
