Romania reappointed outgoing Social Democrat Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu on Monday to lead the government after a pro-European coalition agreement was made to counter the rising far right.

"I appoint Marcel Ciolacu as Prime Minister," said Liberal President Klaus Iohannis. "I wish him great success with the new pro-European coalition," he added.

Iohannis emphasised the coalition's capability to manage the timetable for the upcoming presidential elections, the date of which are yet to be announced.

On 6 December, the Romanian Constitutional Court annulled the presidential elections amid suspicions of Russian interference.

The pro-European coallition are set to present a single candidate for the presidency.
