Russia resumed drone attacks on Ukrainian territory overnight on Sunday, signalling the end of its unilateral ceasefire.

Air raid sirens were heard again in Kyiv and cities such as Odessa, Kharkiv, and Dnipro, according to Ukrainian authorities. There is no information yet on casualties or damage. Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, urged residents to seek shelter.

The ceasefire, initiated by President Vladimir Putin to mark the end of World War II, began on Thursday and ended on Saturday evening. Moscow has rejected a proposal from Ukraine and several European allies for a 30-day ceasefire beginning on Monday.

Putin has proposed direct peace talks with Ukraine, scheduled for Thursday, 15 May, in Istanbul. He aims to resume negotiations from where they were halted in 2022. Kyiv has not yet responded to the offer. According to Putin, Russia is willing to discuss terms without preconditions, leaving the decision with Ukraine and its Western allies. “Those who truly want peace should support this,” he stated.

The West has warned Russia of additional sanctions if it continues to reject peace proposals. The Kremlin remains unimpressed by these threats, stating it will not be pressured into decisions.
