Elon Musk has sharply criticised the huge US budget bill backed by President Donald Trump, labelling it a “disgusting abomination.”
In a post on X, Musk expressed his frustration, saying, “Sorry, but I’ve had enough.” He condemned the bill, calling it “enormous, outrageous, and clientelist.”
“This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination,” he wrote. “Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”
In a series of other posts on X, Musk claimed the bill would “massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion (!!!) and burden American citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt.”
He also claimed that the Republican-dominated Congress was “making America bankrupt.”
Musk’s remarks follow the end of his close collaboration with Trump.
The White House responded swiftly to the remarks, with Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stating that Musk’s comments did not alter President Trump’s stance. "It’s a big, beautiful bill, and he stands by it," she said.
The ‘One Big Beautiful Bill Act,' approved by the House of Representatives on 22 May, extends Trump’s 2017 tax cuts and boosts spending for the military and border security, while making cuts to Medicaid, food-stamps and other assistance programmes.
It still has to get past the Senate. If it does, it will add about $3.8 trillion to the federal government’s $36.2 trillion debt over the next decade, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.
