The Belgian Parliament on Thursday adopted a bill extending the scope of legal protection against discrimination to include prior health conditions.
The bill, tabled by Vooruit, was co-signed by the other parties of the ruling majority. It was adopted unanimously. Only the Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie (N-VA) abstained.
Until now, anti-discrimination legislation did not protect against discrimination based on a previous health condition, for example past cancer.
The new bill follows a 2017 recommendation from the Inter-federal Center for Equal Opportunities, UNIA.
